What you need to know about a marina:

Explanation of the activity

A marina has at  least 10 vessels that can dock or moor in the marina.

Yachts located in the marina are seen as part of the establishment. This means that in addition to the staff of the marina, the boat owners also have to comply with the rules that apply to the marina.

There are rules for waste and waste water.

If there are less than 10 berths? Then this is not a marina as included in the IAB BES. This is set out in Annex 1 of the Decree. There may be rules, for example, for management of waste. Other activities can also be carried out at a marina. For example a restaurant or repairing and spraying vessels.

Where to find the rules

The rules for marinas are set out in section 3.2.1 of the RIA BES.

Type of business

A marina is a type 2 company.

Notification

For this activity, you must notify to the public entity no later than 4 weeks before starting or changing your business. You can read the information you need to submit on the notification page.

Prohibitions and rules

Waste collection

Facilities for the disposal of waste from docked recreational craft must be provided in the marina. The following wastes shall be collected:

  • Waste oils and lubricating grease from maintenance on vessels
  • Oil and fat waste from maintenance of vessels
  • Waste from repair and maintenance work on vessels
  • Bilge water, this is a mixture of water and oil that arises in the engine room of a vessel
  • Domestic waste water
  • The content of chemical toilets

The waste must be collected separately. In addition, the marina’s site must remain clean from waste. This can be achieved by removing waste as often as necessary from the facility to a waste collector appointed by the Executive Council.

Waste water rules

Household waste water taken at the marina must be discharged into the sewer (public waste water system or a treatment facility). For bilge water, the waste water needs to pass a well-maintained sludge trap and oil separator before discharge to sewage. The oil fraction must be disposed of to the waste collector.

Checklist

Pay close attention to the following topics when starting and carrying out the activity:

  • Can you offer all waste (water) collection points to the vessel owners?
  • Is there a connection to public waste water system or waste water treatment facility?
  • Do you have a sludge trap and oil separator for bilge water?
